Baltimore

On Tuesday, August 30, 2011, American College of Surgeons (ACS) hosted an Inspiring Quality Forum in Baltimore, with U.S. Sen. Ben Cardin (D-MD) and several Maryland and Baltimore-area health care leaders at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Addressing more than 75 attendees and 245 online viewers, including surgeons, nurses, administrators, and medical students, host Julie A. Freischlag, MD, FACS, chair of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine’s Department of Surgery and member of the ACS Board of Regents, led a lively discussion about the state of health care delivery in the United States and about tangible programs in place to help improve the quality of surgical care while reducing its cost. Ronald Peterson, president of The Johns Hopkins Hospital and Health System, and Senator Cardin provided opening remarks, followed by a panel of seven Maryland surgical health care leaders.

“The $250 billion dollars in cost savings caught my attention – that and lives saved. That’s a lot of money. That could go a long way in dealing with costs in health care, and that’s just in surgery.”

U.S. Sen. Ben Cardin (D-MD)
